Dry Organic Based Fertilizer

Dry fertilizers have been proven to be more effective with a slower release source of nitrogen than a liquid fertilizer. What’s in the bag though? Take a bag of 25-0-5, which will be my go to straight non-chemical fertilizer. 25% nitrogen, 0% phosphorus and 5% potassium equaling 30% of the bag. The other 70% is typically just filler. More than half of the bag consisting on tiny pebbles that hold little to no nutritional value used to spread the other ingredients evenly. With fillers being one of dry fertilizers biggest problems, my goal is to find and use at any cost fertilizers that replace the fillers with other beneficial nutrients. The way I see it, why not utilize more of that space in the bag?

 Wet Weed Control

With weeds possibly being the number one reason to have a lawn care program, there's no effective organic way to kill weeds selectively in a lawn at this time. I find that wet weed controls tend to work better and can be safer than a dry weed and feed mix like most of your do-it-yourself kits from a big-box store. Wet weed control allows me to just spot spray where there are weeds using up to 80% less chemicals then your typical liquid mix programs used by most of the industry leaders. A lot of companies are coming around to this process, not only for cost but for safety as well. Why spray an entire lawn for weeds if there's only a few? However, I want to offer programs to fit all clients. If you are a person that feels they need a more aggressive approach I can full spray in the spring and the fall. I just don't feel it's necessary. You can use all the weed control in the world but if you have bare spots, thin turf, and cut too short you will have weeds over the summer. Wet weed control is a post emergent not a pre emergent, meaning that the weeds have to be there to kill them, it won’t stop them from growing. What is and always will be the best weed prevention? The answer is thicker grass and proper mowing practices.

Soil Amendment

Along with a quality fertilizer program, a soil amendment or conditioner is a critical part of correcting soil ph. This helps soil become a better habitat for grass. Most companies avoid testing because of cost or make customers pay for the test. I will offer free soil testing so that we can pin point exactly what your lawn requires. Most lawns in this area are somewhat acidic requiring a dolomitic lime or added potassium application to raise the ph. In some cases the ph is high and needs calcitic lime or sulfur to help lower. Testing every 2-3 years lets us know what and how much is need to have the most neutral ph.

Summer and Fall Lawn Pest Control

Protection against lawn pest is very important. Grubs can be easy to prevent with an application of a great product called acelepryn. Most companies again avoid due the cost, I will utilize this product, not only because of it’s effectiveness but the fact that is not a neonicotinoid, commonly found in other grub preventatives which has been linked to damaging the bee population. With acelepryn not only are you guaranteed to have no grub break through but it’s also much safer for people and pets. Summer pest such as chinch bugs, army worms, cut worms ect. can be a little more tricky to deal with depending on the clients views on chemicals. Right now Bifenthrin is used world wide as a pesticide and works great for summer pests. Bad news is it is a neonicotinoid. Can be harmful to bees, other pollinators, aquatic animals and mammals that eat them. I leave it up to the client as to whether or not they want to use it. There are not many alternatives at this time, but I’m always looking for safer options. Currently the best thing to do is to seed with a endophyte enhanced grass type. Endophyte is a fungus that is infused with grass seed that not only repel chinch bugs because of the taste but has other beneficial factors for turf as well.

 Fall Aeration and Over Seed

This is hands down the best thing to do to help thicken turf and and improve soil composition. Aerating has many benefits alone and also gives the opportunity to over seed with a Turf Type Tall Fescue & Kentucky Blue Grass Endophyte grass seed mix.

  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.

  • Enhanced soil water uptake.

  • Improved fertilizer uptake and use.

  • Reduced water runoff and puddling.

  • Stronger turfgrass roots.

  • Reduced soil compaction

  • Helps prevent chinch bug damage

  • renders turf more disease and drought tolerable
